Serengeti walking - Detailed information
How it works:
Our walking safaris will take you into the most remote corners of the Serengeti National Park, giving guests the opportunity to explore this amazing park on foot. All our walking safaris are multiple day walks starting from a minimum of two nights (1 and a ½ day walk) to four nights (3 and a ½ day walk) in the bush.
We do not offer day walks in the park.
The walks will take place in the “Serengeti Wilderness Zoneâ€. We will meet your guests either at Mbusi Mawe Camp or at the Serengeti visitor center inside Seronera, depending on what works best for you.
In general, the program of the day is an early wake up with breakfast in camp, start the walk soon after breakfast, this way we miss the heat of the day. We carry lunch with us and enjoy it in a scenic place whilst on the walk. We plan to be back in camp around 15:00 for a relaxing afternoon. We can also go on a short afternoon walk ending in a scenic place with sundowner drinks.
Guests on walks can expect to see various species of mammals; the most common been Impala, Giraffe, Zebra, Wildebeest, Warthog, Buffalo and Elephant. Obviously we would like to give some of these plenty of space thus for safety and respect to the animals, we do not approach animals unnecessary close and rather enjoy viewing them from outside the confines of a vehicle at a distance. Besides the mammals it is an ideal way to view a huge variety of woodland bird species as well as plants, insects, reptiles and amphibians.
We have a back up vehicle and small camp crew who can assist in case of emergencies and who will be responsible for moving the camp to new locations. Guests never need to carry more than a day backpack with water and personal equipment needed for only that walk.
If a walking safari is longer than two nights, we move the camp once. The camp will stay in one location for walks of only 2 nights and the walks will be circular day walks in to different areas around the camp. Our walks are not strenuous and will rarely walk further than 15km’s per day, over gentle hills. However we can tailor our walks to suit your guests comfort and fitness level since most of our walks are private walks for only your group. However, a guest need to have a fair level of fitness and be able to walk for at least 5 km’s per day on uneven terrain in order to enjoy the experience.
An extremely experienced walking guide will be guiding all walks. This guide will carry a high caliber rifle and he can actually use it… Our guides have been trained to not only guide safe walks but to also bring across the essence of a walking safari and to make guests realize just how special they are having the opportunity to explore this remote corner of bush, all alone and on foot. An armed TANAPA ranger will also join the walk
We will supply your guests with the following:
- A pick up and drop off in the Serengeti, from either Mbusi Mawe Camp or Seronera visitor center.
- All accommodation and meals in a lightweight but comfortable walking camp for all the nights in our camp. Please see the description below for more information on the camp.
- Our prices include TANAPA special camping fees and TANAPA walking fees.
Wayo camp description:
The aim of our camp is to access remote areas in the easiest and cheapest manner possible but we do maintain the high levels of comfort.
Our camp is designed to fit on a small trailer that can easily be towed in to the bush.
Tents are 3-man dome style tents that are easy to set-up with plenty of floor space for two people. You are not going to do the Macarena in it but it is great for a good nights rest in a really remote area. Sleeping is on comfy 4-inch mattresses on the ground and the bedding is cotton covered duvets and cotton sheets.
Hopefully all the meals will be under the stars but incase of bad weather we do have a small mess tent to keep out the rain and insects. For the more adventurous we have a star tent. This is a tent made completely out of gauze where guests can lie in bed looking at the stars. These tents do come with a ‘slash sheet’ that can easily be put up should it rain.
The meals are outstanding. The majority of the preparations will be done in our kitchens in Arusha, this way much more elaborate meals can be served. A small crew will join the safari and do all the final preparations of the food and help around the camp.
Cold drinks, beers and a small wine selection will be available.
Lightweight camp bathrooms:
Since the quality of ones entire safari apparently rests on the standard of the bathroom facilities in bush camps we dedicated an entire section to this subject…
We make use of a spiral, walk in tent. This is something new and if toilets can be refreshing these are.
The use of traditional lightweight camp toilets needs an extremely talented athlete. We have decided to move away from the old style zip up, claustrophobic non-aired toiled cubicle to a non-closed enclosure approach. Ok if it rains in the arid environment we operate in you might have a wet toilet seat or a shower in the rain but hey, there are worse things…
These showers and toilets have proven to work a whole lot better.
Toilets are shallow pit latrines; a hole about 12’ deep is dug and once all is in the hole you sprinkle some soil over. With the open toilet tent these toilets never smell.
Showers are the same type spiral tents. Water is always hot and generally plenty to get clean and refreshed in. We will hang a shower bucket from a tree if trees are available but generally only have a bucket of hot water with a smaller container to throw water over oneself.
