Why Wayo is "Green"

Our philosophy has always been to do what we do in the most environmentally friendly manner? Here is how we do it:

We get guests out of vehicles We are the only company in Tanzania to offer everyone and anyone the opportunity to spend a few hours out of the vehicle on a short walking safari, canoeing safari, mountain biking safari or village walk. This way we get people in touch with the essence of Africa but also limit vehicles use. We take a few thousand guests on activities every year. With out these activities these guests would have been driving around. By providing these activities we cut down on CO2.

Wayo Green CampA small private mobile camp leaving little impact. The size of this camp makes it possible to move with one vehicle and a small staff leaving as little impact as possible. In many cases the vehicle taking the camp and the staff in to the National Parks is the same vehicle the guests are traveling in thus cutting down on vehicle use even more.

Conventional camping safaris generally have large tents that need trucks and many staff to move and set up. These camps leave prime bush locations in a devastating state.

Camp crew also needs to eat and sleep and the bigger the staff the bigger the impact. We have invested in a camp that is easy to set up and manage requiring only two staff members, leaving much less impact.

We have done away with all fossil fuels for lighting at night and all our lights are solar powered lights.

We have our own water filtration plant where all our drinking water is purified. Our aim is to cut down on the use of plastic and not to send any plastic bottles in to the bush.

We only make use of "bio-bricks" for cooking meals instead of buying charcoal. Charcoal production in Tanzania is the single most devastating practice on the forests and natural environment in developing countries. Bio-bricks are 'charcoal like' bricks made out of coconut husks. Using this form of fuel is much better for the environment.

All the meals served in camp are of excellent standard and all raw ingredients are purchased from local markets, local shops and farms putting money back in to local communities.

These Green Camps are the ideal form of accommodation from where guests can take walking safaris in to very remote areas of the bush. National Parks have released this and only allow such small, well managed camps to enter the National Park wilderness zones. This is the reason why Wayo Africa is one of only a hand full of companies allowed to conduct walking safaris inside the Serengeti National Park.

Guide training schoolWayo Africa has been outfitting a guide training school for the past 8 years and are one of the most recognized guide training facilities in Tanzania.

The Learning spaceWe are very actively supporting a small non for profit organization called The Learning Space.

Only employ Tanzanians: We strongly believe in training and employing Tanzanian people in key positions. Currently Wayo Africa only has one ex-pat working in the company.

Director cycles to work:
