Lightweight camp bathrooms

Since the quality of one's entire safari apparently rests on the standard of the bathroom facilities in bush camps we dedicated an entire page to this subject…

Shower and toilet tent:

We make use of a spiral, walk-in tent. This is something new and if toilets can be refreshing these are.

The use of traditional lightweight camp toilets needs an extremely talented athlete. Toilet tents of old are square, closed plastic cubicles approximately 1m by 1m wide with a 7-foot high zip. Without going in to too much detail…lets just say it is challenging doing one's deeds in that small space, trying to keep the zip closed, trying to get air in a plastic cubicle that’s been standing in the African sun all day long and keeping flies off your you-know-what.

We have gone for the no zip, big space and no-closed enclosure approach. Ok if it rains in the arid environment we operate in you might have a wet toilet seat or a shower in the rain but hey, there are worse things (flies on your…).

These showers and toilets have proven to work a whole lot better.

Toilets are shallow pit latrines; meaning we dig a hole about 12’ deep and once all is in the hole you sprinkle some soil over. With the open toilet tent these toilets never stink.

Showers are the same type of spiral tents. Water is always hot and generally plenty to get clean and refreshed in. We will hang a shower bucket from a tree if trees are available but generally only have a bucket of hot water with a smaller container to throw water over oneself.
