Lake Natron & Oldonyo Lengai

Ol Donyo Lengai or the "Mountain of God" to the Maasai tribe who inhabit this area is the only active volcano in Tanzania. Being an active sulphurous volcano that is not explosive, it holds little danger for people living close by. This area is religious land to the Masaai and being there you can’t help but feel the power of the area. Surrounded by a barren desert-like environment, Ol Donyo Lengai rises 2878m (6400feet) into the skies. To the north lies Lake Natron, one of only three flamingo breeding grounds in Africa. The area offers a variety of walks into deep gorges flowing out of the Ngorongoro highlands and walks around Lake Natron. For the more adventurous a summit attempt of the volcano is an exhilarating experience. Departing at 2AM in the morning your aim is to be on the summit for sunrise, a sight that you will never forget.

The most fascinating sight in this area are the Masaai themselves. One can’t help feeling guilty for all the material goods that we need to survive, when you see these people who live in such harsh conditions who can still manage to stay one of the friendliest tribes in Africa.
